Earlier in the year we were tossing around ideas for projects that we could base our 2020 Home Education Unit reports on. Having looked at the QLD curriculum for grade 4 I suggested a diorama of…somewhere…for geography. I’d been thinking of somewhere Australia to tied in with environmental sustainability, but Abi piped up and said she wanted to create a Mt Everest diorama. Why not?
Coincidentally, Mt Everest has been cropping up in the news a lot lately – 11 tonnes of rubbish and who knows how many bodies. This morning, while we were getting ready to start our diorama, National Geographic released a story with accompanying drone photo of the mountain.
Dioramas aren’t really an Australian thing, or at least they weren’t in the 80s when I went to school. We mainly got to stick things to coloured cardboard and stand in front of the class so we can read from palm cards.
Since we started homeschooling the girls we’ve watched a few YouTube videos about diorama making and have wanted to make one ourselves. This Mt Everest project seemed like the perfect opportunity.
Step 1 – Making the form
You can use just about anything to make the base shape for paper mâché. We used scrunched foil because it’s easy to shape and because we had it on hand (also, it’s cheap and I’m a fan of cheap).
This part was pretty easy, but required a bit of help to get the shape right – or at least close enough.
Once we were happy with the shape we used masking tape to cover it and hold all the bits of foil together.
Abi did most of this part on her own, but did need a little help to keep the tape stuck and smooth.
In step 2 we’ll be making a simple glue to stick strips of paper to our form.
